Dr Tunde Abdulsalam, who provided the case study for a British Medical report, carried out an MRI scan over fears it could be cancerous.
But tests revealed it was in fact a painless lipoma - or a tumour of fatty tissue.
He explained the benign growth on the right-hand side of her mid-back, which had grown in the last three years, was firm to the touch.
Dr Abdulsalam told MailOnline that it was the "largest he had ever seen" and most lipomas are much smaller at about 1cm in size.
The report says they tend to occur more frequently in people aged between 40 and 60.
He added that most patients tend to have them removed sooner for "cosmetic reasons", with liposuction being an option.
The report said the woman was a "heavy-smoker, with a history of chronic obstructive airway disease".
She is now on a waiting list to have the tumour removed, according to reports.
